The following is a review of the 2008 season of Indians second baseman Josh Barfield.
What I said then: "It was a hugely disappointing first season baseball Cleveland for Barfield, who was eventually replaced by Asdrubal Cabrera. Barfield has always been a streaky hitter, and he never started a good streak last season. His rookie season in a roomy park and minor league numbers indicate that Barfield should be baseball but his poor plate discipline is still a concern for his batting average. With a playing opportunity, this is a perfect chance to buy low on a potential 20/20 second baseman, though."
Barfield's season could not have gone any worse. San Diego's former top prospect failed to make the Indians out of spring training, and he looked dejected in the minors. He hit just .251 at Triple-A Buffalo with pedestrian pop and speed totals. For the season, he played in only 12 games at the majors league level and batted just .182.
The Indians used Asdrubal Cabrera as their primary second baseman for most of the season, and even when Cabrera struggled the Indians didn't give Barfield much of an opportunity to contribute. Barfield's struggles make the Indians' Kevin Kouzmanoff for Barfield swap of two years ago look terrible, but we shouldn't give up on Barfield just yet. The emergence of former top prospect Brandon Phillips after the Indians gave up on him shows just how difficult it is to draw conclusions on a young player. Barfield was a top prospect in the minors for a reason, and he has performed quite well as a major leaguer in the past.
